Hardwood Flooring Care and Cleaning Guide

Keep your hardwood floors looking great by using our hardwood flooring care and cleaning guide. With the right care and maintenance, you will have long-lasting, beautiful hardwood floors.

vacuum

Vacuum or sweep your hardwood floors regularly.  Many of the scratches in the finish of your hardwood floors come from the dust and gravel that we bring into our homes.  With routine vacuuming or sweeping of high traffic areas (hallways, doorways, sitting areas, etc.) the finish will last significantly longer.

Wipe up spills and moisture as soon as possible.  Natural wood is a porous material, and many finishes will show a stain in areas where moisture has been allowed to collect.  To prevent staining, wipe up excess moisture immediately.

Spill

Do not use soap based cleaners or "mop and wax" type of cleaners.  Many, if not all soap based products will leave a film or a cloudy layer when applied to a hardwood floor.

Do not use abrasive cleaners such as steel wool and scouring powders.  These types of cleaners can damage the finish of the floor. Use a damp cloth for routine cleaning.  For diffucult stains such as tar, tree sap, or grease, use an acetone based cleaner and wipe clean with damp cloth.

Use protective pads underneath chair and furniture legs.  Protective pads will help prevent scratches and help with ease of movement.

Rug

Place area rugs or doormats in entryways, hallways and other high traffic areas.  Use floor mats around the sink, dishwasher or other places where water may gather.

Protect floors from direct sunlight.  Many finishes can dull after prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.  The lighter the finish, the more visible fading will become over time.

Use hardwood flooring cleaners that are made for use on Urethane finishes.  Visit your local area flooring dealer for product information and safe handling instructions.
